Trusculpt vs Coolsculpting: What is the difference?

Two non-surgical body contouring technologies are available for addressing localised areas of fat — TruSculpt ID and CoolSculpting.

Let’s explore how each works and what to consider. A consultation at Ascension Cosmetic Medicine with Dr Scott Allison is recommended to assess your individual circumstances and whether either treatment may be appropriate for you.

It is important to note that neither TruSculpt ID nor CoolSculpting is a weight loss treatment. Both are designed to address localised areas of fat and are not a substitute for a healthy diet or regular physical activity.

How does TruSculpt ID work?

TruSculpt ID uses Monopolar radiofrequency (RF) technology to deliver controlled heat to targeted areas of the body. The device applies heat to fat cells in the treatment area, which signals to the body to break down and eliminate those cells through its natural processes over time. The technology is designed to selectively target fat cells in specific areas.

The sensation during treatment has been described by some patients as warmth. Individual experiences vary, and your clinician will discuss what to expect during treatment.

TruSculpt ID’s applicator design allows it to be used across a range of treatment areas.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to target fat cells in a treatment area. The fat cells are cooled to a temperature that causes them to break down, and they are gradually processed and eliminated by the body over time.

CoolSculpting’s applicator requires a sufficient volume of tissue in the treatment area for the device to function correctly. This means it may be less suited to smaller or more specific treatment areas compared to some other technologies.

What are the differences between the two technologies?

The main practical differences relate to the mechanism used — heat versus cooling — and the design of the applicator, which influences which areas of the body each device can treat. Both technologies work by targeting fat cells for elimination by the body over time.
The approach that may be more appropriate for your circumstances will depend on individual factors including treatment area, fat distribution, and skin characteristics. This will be assessed during your consultation.

What can I expect after treatment?

Following treatment, the treated area may feel warm or slightly sensitive. These are common temporary effects. Your clinician will provide personalised aftercare guidance at your appointment. Recovery experiences vary between individuals.

Is this treatment suitable for me?

TruSculpt ID may be considered for a range of individuals, though suitability depends on individual factors including treatment location, skin characteristics, and fat distribution. These factors will be assessed during consultation. As noted above, this treatment is not a weight loss procedure and is not suitable as a substitute for healthy lifestyle measures.
