Pigmentation peels

Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® are clinical depigmentation treatments designed to treat pigmentation caused by sun exposure, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and melasma. They can be used safely on all skin types, including darker complexions. They are safe and effective to be performed all year round and most patients only require one treatment.

Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® are used worldwide and are one of the most effective treatments for pigmentation. Dermamelan® is a more potent treatment and can only be performed by a Doctor. We will advise if this level of treatment is suitable at your consultation.

FAQ

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition of increased melanin (pigment) in the skin that presents as darkness and uneven skin tone. It is the most common skin complaint in Australia and can contribute to the appearance of ageing in the skin.

The mechanism for this increase in dermal melanin can be driven by a number of factors. These include sun exposure, hormonal changes (contraception, pregnancy, thyroid conditions), genetic factors (common in darker skin types) and following inflammation.

What to expect?

Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® are depigmentation peels that are designed to decrease discolouration and pigmentation in the skin. It is particularly popular for the treatment of melasma (although sun protection and skincare actives remain key here). The entire process includes using products in the lead up to the peel to prep the skin, the in-office peel and the home care products afterwards.

Once your skin has been adequately prepped the Cosmelan® or Dermamelan® peel will be applied to your skin for 8-12 hours. Ideally this will be done in the morning so that you have the day to allow for this time. This will then be washed off at home and the aftercare products will be applied daily for the next 72 hours.

Over the following week the skin will start to peel and flake revealing healthy new skin underneath. You will be reviewed in clinic on day 3 to have a Heallite II treatment and encourage healing. These appointments (including the Aftercare products) are all included in the cost of the treatment.

What is the downtime?

Day 1 – 4: You will experience tightness, tingling, heat, mild swelling and redness. Dermamelan is higher strength and will result in slightly more downtime.

Day 4-5: The skin will start to peel and flake (lasting 7-10 days). This can be anywhere from mild flaking to severe peeling depending on the condition of your skin. The is important not to pick the skin during this process as this can cause further trauma and potential scarring. It is important to allow the skin to shed naturally and avoid exfoliating during this time.

Who is not suited to Cosmelan® and Dermamelan®?

  • Unable to use sunscreen daily
  • Pregnant or breast feeding
  • Rosacea or inflammatory skin conditions that that are not adequately controlled
  • Currently on oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane) or have been in the last 12 months

How many treatments do I need?

The underlying cause of pigment in the skin and health of your skin will determine how many sessions are required. However, only one treatment is need for most clients.

What does it cost?
