About Cosmelan® and Dermamelan®

Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® are clinical depigmentation treatments designed to treat pigmentation caused by sun exposure, post inflammatory inflammation and melasma. They can be used on all skin types, even darker skins with melasma. They are safe and effective to be performed all year round and most patients only require one session.

Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® is used worldwide and is one of the most effective treatments for pigmentation. Dermamelan® is a more potent technology and we will advise upon consultation if this strength is required. It is a doctor only treatment and can only be performed in a doctor run clinic

What to expect?

Melasma is an inflammatory condition that sits deep in our dermal layers. This is usually exacerbated by internal factors and is not something that can be completely removed topically. Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® can certainly help to improve the appearance of melasma but it is not a complete fix. Other factors can be addressed upon consultation and the correct plan can be formulated for each individual as no two skins are the same.

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that presents as darkness and uneven skin tone. It is the most common skin complaint in Australia and is responsible for premature aging of the skin.

This can be caused by a number of different factors such as sun exposure, hormonal imbalances (contraception, pregnancy, thyroid conditions), genetic factors (common in darker skin Fitzpatrick’s) and inflammation (post acne scarring, waxing, eczema and psoriasis).

What is the downtime?

Day 1 – 4: You will experience tightness, tingling, heat, mild swelling and redness. Dermamelan being higher strength the skin will experience more downtime.

Day 4-5: The skin will start to peel and can last anywhere from 7-10 days. This can be anywhere from mild flaking to severe peeling depending on the condition of your skin. The is important not to pick the skin during this process as this can course unnecessary trauma and potential scarring. Allow the skin to shed naturally and avoid exfoliating during this time.

Who is not suited to Cosmelan® and Dermamelan®?

  • Someone not committed to using SPF daily.
  • Pregnant or breast feeding
  • Rosacea that is not managed
  • You have been using oral tretinoin (Roaccutane) in the last 12 months

Depending on the type of pigment and health of your skin will determine how many sessions are required. Generally only one treatment is need for most clients.
