Treatment for Under-Eye Shadows

The area beneath the eyes — known clinically as the tear trough — is a common area of concern for many people. Changes in this region can contribute to the appearance of under-eye shadows. This page provides information about the factors that influence these changes and the non-surgical treatment options that may be considered.

A consultation at Ascension Cosmetic Medicine with Dr Scott Allison is recommended as a starting point to assess your individual anatomy and discuss whether treatment may be appropriate for your circumstances.

What causes under-eye shadows

There is no single cause for changes in the under-eye area. They often result from a combination of genetics, natural ageing, and anatomical factors.

Ageing: As the body ages, collagen production naturally reduces. This can contribute to volume changes beneath the eyes and reduced structural support in the mid-cheek area, which may affect the appearance of the under-eye region over time.

Natural anatomy: Some people naturally have a more pronounced tear trough area, often related to bone structure or fluid retention associated with allergies or lifestyle factors.

Genetics: Tear trough hollowing can be an inherited characteristic. Some people notice visible under-eye volume loss from a young age due to family traits.

What happens during the treatment?

Your journey begins with a personalised consultation where we assess your facial anatomy, including bone structure and volume loss under the eyes. From there, we create a tailored approach designed to suit your needs.

Tear trough treatment may take place over more than one appointment. The number of sessions and the approach taken will depend on individual assessment and will be discussed during your consultation. Individual results will vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Aftercare and What to Expect

The under-eye region is delicate and rich in blood vessels, so mild bruising or swelling may occur. These effects are generally temporary and settle within a few days to a couple of weeks, although individual recovery varies.

To support a smooth recovery, we recommend:

  • Avoiding makeup for at least 4 hours after treatment
  • Skipping exercise for 24 hours
  • Avoiding alcohol the evening of your session
  • Applying a cold compress to reduce swelling and bruising
  • Refraining from swimming for one week
