Anti-wrinkle injections are among the safest, most effective, and most affordable non-surgical cosmetic procedures used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles from key areas of your face.
More commonly known as Botox, anti wrinkle injections, have been used by millions to treat the most common signs of aging, including crow’s feet around the eyes, frown lines, wrinkles on the forehead, and fine lines around the lips.
The aging process can be a very difficult process to accept; let’s face it, we all want healthy, vibrant, younger looking skin. The good news is that we don’t have to accept growing old gracefully – no way!
In addition to taking care of your skin by protecting it from the sun, avoiding smoking and exposure to harmful environmental toxins, eating a wide range of fresh fruits and vegetables, and staying hydrated, there have been amazing new advances in nonsurgical cosmetic injections anti-wrinkle injections that allows us to literally turn back the hands of time, ensuring that your skin looks and feels great – no matter how many birthdays you may (or may not) have had!
Before we dive into available nonsurgical cosmetic injections, let’s take a few minutes to better understand fine lines and wrinkles, including how and where they form and the difference between each.
Understanding Anti-Wrinkle Injections: The Difference Between Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Most people use the terms “fine lines” and “wrinkles” interchangeably, but they are actually very different – both in where they appear and in how they are treated; being aware of these differences is key to better understanding what anti-wrinkle injection options are available for you.
Typically, fine lines are the first sign of aging, often appearing around the eyes, on your forehead, or at the corners of your mouth. Left untreated, these fine lines will become deeper, more noticeable, and more difficult to treat; in other words, they turn into what we call wrinkles.
Most fine lines and wrinkles are also considered dynamic wrinkles, meaning that they form as a result of repetitive muscle movements, forming over time while you squint, smile, or frown. Other wrinkles form as a result of collagen, elastin, and fat loss combined with the gentle, constant pull of gravity over time.

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections, and Do They Work?
Anti-wrinkle injections are a type of cosmetic injectable neuromodulator, meaning they work by safely blocking nerve impulses to the muscles that contribute to crow’s feet, laugh lines, frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and chin dimpling. By blocking these signals to the muscle, anti-wrinkle injections reduce, and in some cases prevent, the muscles from contracting and forming fine lines and wrinkles.
Unlike dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections do not immediately fill or fix the wrinkle or fine line. They actually work by preventing the affected areas from creasing and wrinkling, allowing your skin to rest, recover, and heal over time.
During consultation, an expert cosmetic physician, like Dr. Allison, will determine how much anti-wrinkle injections you’ll need to soften, or even prevent, natural movement of the facial muscles contributing to the wrinkling and creasing.
Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections Safe?
Despite being the most popular cosmetic procedure, with over 7.4 million injections last year alone1, anti-wrinkle injections continue to have an excellent proven track record of safety. Administered in very low, therapeutic doses, anti-wrinkle injections have a nearly 20-year history that has demonstrated effective results with no long-term side effects or health risks.
Botox is the most well-known of the anti-wrinkle injections, but it is not the only one available; Dysport and Xeomin are two other popular cosmetic injections also available to treat fine lines and wrinkles. All three injections are safe, effective anti-wrinkle treatment options that produce semi-permanent results noticeable in 3 to 5 days and lasting between 3 to 5 months.
What Does an Anti-Wrinkle Injection Procedure Look Like?
A typical non-surgical anti-wrinkle injection procedure starts with a consultation where Dr. Allison will assess the severity of wrinkles and creasing on and around your forehead, chin, eyes and mouth to better determine which specific areas need to be addressed. At this point, Dr. Allison will decide on which specific anti-wrinkle injection will achieve the results you desire.
The procedure itself is non-invasive, uses tiny needles, and typically takes 15 to 30-minutes to complete; there is minimal pain associated with anti-wrinkle injections. Nearly all patients are able to return to normal activities right after leaving the office; and most importantly, the results of the cosmetic injections are noticeable within 3 to 5 days and last for months.
